20th FP&M SETA Annual Vukani! Fashion Awards 2014

The 20th FP&M SETA Annual Vukani! Fashion Awards, premier platform for the empowerment of our country’s young and emerging designers concluded this weekend with the African Pride Awards Gala Dinner held at Shine Studios in Johannesburg on Friday, 17 October 2014 and the Vukani! Fashion Awards for Young designers held on 18 October 2014 at the same venue.

African Pride awards were bestowed on

  • Sibusiso Leope aka DJ Sbu (Most Inspirational Entrepreneur)
  • Thandiswa Mazwai (Afrocentric Dresser)
  • Life Time Award Mamma Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (in absentia) The Life Time Award was received on Mrs Madikizela-Mandela's behalf by Mrs Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, former Speaker of the National Assembly and former Minister.

The awards were handed over by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Mduduzi Manana, who was the key note speaker at the Gala Dinner on 17 October 2014. The Deputy Minister commended the FP&M SETA for their support of the South African Fashion Design industry.

 The Vukani! Fashion Awards for young designers were presented during a fashion extravaganza on 18 October unveiling the sophisticated creations of the twenty finalists created around this year’s theme “We have a story to tell” - an artistic interpretation of the political events since 1994. 

The winners of the Young Designers Awards were:

  • High Fashion/Traditional Garment Award  - Tshukudu Phasha
  • Most Innovative Costume Award - Joy Tswala
  • Best Ready-to-Wear Collection and the Overall Winner of the 20th Vukani! Fashion Awards for Young Designers - Masebe Motsepe

The week-long event started-off with fashion and craft exhibitions at the Festival Mall in Kempton Park from 14 – 19 October and a series of training and information workshops, presented by experts from various niche areas, held between 15 and 17 October, which were attended by more than 260 youth from the Johannesburg area.
